featuring Mick Haley,
USC Head Women's Volleyball Coach;
2x national champions (2002 and 2003),
six NCAA Final Four appearances (2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2011);
2011 Pac-12 Coach of the Year;

Take a front-row seat at series of pre-season, USC Women's Volleyball practices. For the first time ever, Mick Haley shares his practice structure with you, letting you in on the drills, techniques and coaching tips that has positioned the Ladies of Troy as one of the top programs in the nation.

Day one delivers various station work including passing, setting, middle hitting, defense, and 6-on-6 play. Listen in as Coach Haley corrects, instructs and teaches his athletes how to "Load" and "Balance." You'll also learn why USC has added 45 minutes of daily "pre-hab" exercises to their practices!

As the series unfolds skills are added and put together, and the speed of practice increases. Focus turns to the middle blockers, passers, and setters as Coach Haley shares many important tips such how to pick up the trajectory of served balls, the importance of "being responsible", and making sure footwork is faster than the ball. Focus continues on balance, and Haley reiterates "push and re-balance" on defense.

You'll also get to sit in on a team film session. Coach Haley and his assistants break down video coverage of a prior team scrimmage. This session gives valuable insight into defensive positioning and philosophy, as well as offensive strategy.

Following the film session, the team hits the court for drills. Starting with a serve and chase warm-up drill, this practice follows with an out of system setting drill that will help your offense get quality swings when out of system for all players and a fast-paced digging drill that will get your players many quality defensive touches in a short amount of time.

Haley breaks down player placement and responsibilities in attacker coverage. The team then breaks into station drills, as servers and passers work together while setters work on set location. The practice concludes with a servers vs. passers competition to simulate competitive situations and to create a fun, challenging atmosphere.

An evening practice features a team-building session in the classroom, led by a sports psychologist. This session covers team rules and team support. The players help to define the qualities that they strive to incorporate into their culture, and discuss team bonding and motivational traditions.

The final practice features small-group stations on multiple courts, which are skill-focused. The team then comes together for a full team "goal-based" scrimmage that helps train player focus and intensity. The remainder of practice includes three fast-paced digging drills, individual serving repetitions and 6 vs 6 drills that emphasize out of system transition to attack.

All Access Florida Volleyball Practice
with Mary Wise, University of Florida Head Coach;

Mary Wise and her team of coaches at the University of Florida provide a court-side seat to the first three practices of their 2011-12 season. Watch as they introduce their system and vocabulary to the new team members and refresh those concepts with the returning athletes in a live practice setting. Through all three practices, the drills and teaching are upbeat and develop the Florida system of play in an incremental, step-by-step approach.

Day 1:

  • See the benefits of incorporating floor moves in your practice
  • Teach the eye sequence necessary to be in the right spot to make a play
  • Learn a variety of sets and the necessary timing needed to execute each
In the first practice of Day 1, Coach Wise and her staff jump right in with partner drills that work on individual and specific defensive moves. The day progresses into an area that all coaches talk about: Communication. Coach Wise does a great job of incorporating this skill in her 4 vs. 4 drill. She creates a situation that forces the players to communicate until it becomes a habit. The players then work on serve and serve receive, an area that all coaches know is necessary in order to have a successful season.

Practice 2 of Day 1 starts with a core workout on the gym floor. This part of practice focuses on the offense and defense at the net. The players then move into an eye sequence segment. Seeing and processing what is happening on the other side of the net. Then the hitters are introduced to the different sets (location, tempo, angles to attack) found in the Gators offensive system. The day ends with a "dig or die" drill that emphasizes getting a hand on all balls on defense.

Day 2:

  • Learn the proper way to make a good defensive read and a quality dig
  • Learn the Yes or No Swing Drill to teach your players when to go for the big hit and when to turn a bad ball into a quality swing
  • Improve your passing accuracy with footwork and platform angles
The first practice of Day 2 focuses on defense and defensive reads. A lot of digging and digging concepts are introduced, with the team breaking into smalls groups to really focus on individual technique. Outside hitters work on passing from the left side of the court and getting into their hitting route. At the end of practice the team goes through the 4 vs. 4 Communication Drill.

The second practice focuses on passing and serve receive. A lot of instruction is given on how to pass by moving the feet, seeing the ball's trajectory from the server before it crosses the net and creating the perfect angle to target. Also, in this practice the Yes or No Swing Drill is introduced. A great drill to teach your players when to go for the big hit and when to turn a bad ball into a quality swing.

Each drill builds on the previous drill and progressively integrates the communication elements with the skills.

Day 3:

  • Learn the defensive scheme and system that has propelled the Gators to success
  • Learn different 6 vs. 6 drills with various scoring options to bring a certain level of focus to the practice session
  • Get different serving drills to develop aggressive and accurate serves
Day 3 starts with serving. All players rotate through three courts, with each court having its own focus. Team defense is introduced with a lot of instruction and guidance from the Gator staff. The defensive system is established with each player's responsibilities and then the team is put into various team defensive drills where coaches give a lot of feedback based on the situation. In this practice the team is place in 6 vs. 6 team drills with different scoring methods to emphasize a certain focus. This is a great way to get players to put themselves in better position to be successful.

High School Coaching Academy: Serve & Serve Receive
with Tom Keating,
former Dubuque Wahlert HS Head Coach,
11x state champions, 7x Iowa coach of the year and 2003 National coach of the year.

Take your opponent our of their rhythm, out of their serve receive and out of their offense

As an 11-time State Champion High School Coach Tom Keating has gained the respect and admiration of his peers. He is one of the best High School volleyball coaches in the nation.

Coach Keating shares his philosophy on how to disrupt your opponent and apply pressure with good serve and serve receive techniques. Keating makes these techniques as simple as possible while eliminating unnecessary movement. Starting with basic concepts and progressing into the specific application techniques, these skills and concepts are easily transferable to a variety of skill levels.

You will see high school level athletes demonstrate the floater, jump floater, and top spin serve. The modeling of these serves takes abstract concepts and makes them concrete and easy to understand. The demonstrators provide a full speed demonstration of each serve, followed by Keating's step-by-step build up of the skill, followed by more full speed demonstrations.

Keating then walks you through zone serving and how to use it to disrupt your opponent's offense. Several serving drills are included to fine tune accuracy while maximizing practice reps.

In the second half of the video, Keating breaks down the important elements of serve receive passing. Demonstrators model the proper body positioning starting with the feet and working up to the head. Once body position is established, he demonstrates proper footwork and movement patterns. The drills used in this section focus on training the early stages of passing and end with more complex movement patterns.

This is a good training video for coaches at any level - junior high, high school and club. At the beginning of each segment, Coach Keating reviews the fundamentals of each technique and follows up with a series of drills created to ingrain the desired mechanics. You will discover critical elements that need to be incorporated and rehearsed during practice in order to have success. Cue words are provided to enable you to communicate more accurately with your athletes in effort to correct unwanted behavior and reinforce proper technique.

The skills taught in this video will give your players and your team a competitive edge in the serve and serve receive phases of the game.
