Cover: the core strength: pilates for triathletes
The Core Strength: Pilates for Triathletes
with June Quick,
Certified Pilates Instructor, licensed Physical Therapist, Certified Athletic Trainer,
and Stanford University Swimming consultant
and featuring Barb Lindquist, #1 Ranked Triathlete and 2004 Olympian

In this excellent Pilates program (Quick affectionately refers to as "Triathalates"), June Quick shares her unique on-land program for multi-sport athletes that uniquely intertwines Pilates exercises to strengthen the core and shoulder girdle, yoga exercises to increase flexibility and lung capacity, and stretching exercises to accommodate the use of the extremities while maintaining posture, line, and balance of the core. The goal of the program is to assist a multi-sport athlete in achieving and maintaining proper posture, line, and balance while running, biking, and swimming. Quick begins this video with a brief anatomy review of the body core and shoulder muscle areas that the program targets: areas crucial to multi-sport athletes. She then proceeds with three specific 20-minute follow-along workouts: 1) Upper core, 2) Middle core, and 3) Lower core. In each workout, Quick leads World-renowned triathlete Barb Lindquist through an "area specific" workout on a "long roll" (foam roller). To facilitate those wanting to work without a foam roll, Quick simultaneously coaches a second demonstrator on a traditional Pilates mat. Each workout also incorporates valuable "prehab" exercises to help prevent the most common multi-sport injuries! As a bonus, Quick offers tips for maintaining proper posture, line, and balance for running, biking, and swimming.

The Power: Strength and Conditioning for Triathletes
with JR Rosania,
BS Exercise Science, CSCS, named "America's Top Trainer" (2004) by Men's Journal

Having coached and competed in more than 130 triathlons (10 of these were "Ironman" triathlons!), Rosania knows, and understands, the strength and conditioning needs for triathletes; Rosania shares this wealth of knowledge in this excellent three-part presentation. In Part 1, JR shares the program's components, key workout factors, and program goals. In Part 2, he teaches and demonstrates over 30 exercises designed to improve overall strength, function, and muscular endurance of triathlon-specific muscles with residual benefits of increasing range of motion, muscle tone, power output, and decreasing the chance of injury from training. JR groups the exercises into core and low back exercises, push/pull exercises, functional legs exercises, and rotator cuff exercises. In Part 3, Rosania shows how to appropriately select exercises from each group to create your own quick, concise and highly efficient program designed to be done two or three times weekly. Rosania concludes with a sample of a detailed weekly workout plan. Rosania's program is specifically designed for minimal equipment needs that include: a pair of light and heavy dumbbells, exercise tubing, a 10-inch high bench, a Swiss ball, a medicine ball, and a timer.
