Faster Fast Sprint Freestyle Turns & Transitions
with Richard Quick, Auburn Head Coach,
and Brett Hawke, Auburn Sprint Coach

What set Auburn sprinters Fred Bousquet and Cesar Cielo--the two fastest sprinters in NCAA history--apart from their competition? It was their domination in turns and transitions. Coaches Quick and Hawke share with you the tools to build a faster fast sprint freestyle turn and transition focusing upon five areas of instruction: Approach, Summersault, Push-off, Streamline and Transition. Quick begins with training for the approach by teaching the skill of submerging. Moving to the summersault, Quick and Hawke present summersault techniques, reinforcing that the tighter the tuck, the faster the body can spin. Next, the coaches move to the wall for push-off drills and wall alignment strategies to maximize carrying the energy going into the wall through the push-off. Quick and Hawke then discuss and demonstrate skill set necessary for an effective transition from being an underwater swimmer on the push-off to a surface swimmer through the breakout stroke cycle.

Gettin' Better with David Marsh: Tips, Drills & Skills for Faster Turns
with David Marsh,
8 X NCAA Coach of the Year,
12 X NCAA Championships at Auburn;
2 X Olympic Coach,
Head Coach, Mecklenburg Aquatic Club of North Carolina

Nothing exemplifies Coach Marsh's passion for fast swimming like the attention to detail that he demands in turns. Along with the start, Marsh feels that the turn is a skill that if honed and perfected, can bring about significant time drops for swimmers at any level! Marsh feels that with all turns, it is crucial to build the turn from "spinning" foundations done at mid-pool before proceeding to the wall. For all turns, Marsh presents mid-pool drills that teach and focus on the art of compact and tight spinning. Marsh proceeds to the wall with his "plant, pause and push" sequence before executing the full turn. Marsh begins with turns for breast and fly - short axis turns followed by long axis turns, free and back and finishes with turns for the individual medley. Throughout the presentation, Marsh shares turn tips that created a "wall domination" reputation for his Auburn swimmers!
