4-4-2 vs 4-3-3
BY Author Michele Tossani

Sir Alex Ferguson and Jos‚ Mourinho are two of the world's top coaches, yet their tactics and systems are very different. This book describes the 4-4-2 system Ferguson uses with Manchester United and the 4-3-3 formation Mourinho has successfully employed at Chelsea and Inter Milan. Each of their preferred formations is covered in great detail including an insight into each system and how and why the key players are used to create the greatest advantage for the team. When new players are introduced the dynamics of the system change and this book shows you how these top managers adjust their teams to gain the result they need. This book will take you inside the minds of these two tactical wizards.

Every system of play has strengths and weaknesses. The challenge for each coach is to play to your strengths and attack the weaknesses of the other team, while leaving as few openings as possible for the opponent. 4-4-2 vs 4-3-3 describes how these systems of play match-up against each other and how Ferguson and Mourinho made adjustments to maximize their effectiveness.

Do players fit the system or does the coach determine the system depending on the players at his disposal? The qualities and roles of players like Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, John Terry and Petr Chech in Chelsea's 4-3-3 and Ryan Giggs, Christiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney in Manchester United's 4-4-2 are all discussed.

Whether your team plays a 4-4-2, 4-3-3 or some other formation, this unique insight into two of the world's best coaches and their tactical thinking will help you while training your own team and preparing a game plan for upcoming opponents.

30 Minute Soccer Clinic - Creating Space
with Dean Simpkins,
15 years full time coaching experience in England, South Africa, USA and Australia;
holds a UEFA/AFC Advanced License and previously coached at the Norwich City Centre of Excellence.

Good players are often not involved in the game enough to make a serious impact. This can be a major handicap for a team with exceptional forwards who don't see enough of the ball to score goals. One way to ensure your best players are always involved is to teach them how to create space so they are in a position to receive passes.

30 Minute Soccer Clinic - Creating Space to Score starts with simple drills to teach players the technique of checking away then coming back to receive the pass. Different exercise progress the session by adding defenders. Once players understand how to create space individually, the session focuses on working with two forwards and methods of creating space for each other.

This session was conducted at the 2008 Football Coaching International Coaching Conference, Brisbane, Australia.

30 Minute Soccer Clinic DVDs provide quality instruction demonstrated in a condensed training session of approximately 30 minutes. However, the drills and exercises in this DVD can be conducted as a complete training session or utilized in your training sessions regularly throughout the season.

Drills to Build the Dynamic 4-1-4-1 Formation
with Butch Lauffer,
West Texas A&M University Head Soccer Coach,
Finished 2009 season ranked #11 in NCAA Division II;
USSF "A" license, Grade 1 coaching license (Irish Football Association), Class "A" License (United European Football Assoc.), UEFA pro license (Scottish Football Association);
2008 Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 Women's National Team Assistant Coach

Butch Lauffer teaches the dynamic and adaptable 4-1-4-1 formation using a whole-part-whole teaching method.

By incorporating the 4-1-4-1, you will gain more flexibility of the shape. The 4-1-4-1 also allows you to play with a holding midfielder, which gives your midfield players more freedom to play between the lines.

Before each on-field demonstration Lauffer gives an in-depth, computer animated explanation illustrating the tactics, soccer principles and key coaching points that should be employed with the 4-1-4-1.

Coach Lauffer begins by distinguishing between the roles and responsibilities of the two most important positions in this formation: the holding midfielder and the striker. The holding midfielder acts as a windshield wiper that runs back and forth applying defensive pressure in front of the defensive line by shielding and intercepting passes. The lone striker needs to be strong and mobile and be able to hold the ball until supporting players build an attack from the midfield and fullback positions.

Defensively, Lauffer illustrates the 4-1-4-1's flexibility in matching up against the most common formations, the 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and 3-5-2. He follows with an on-field demonstration against a 4-4-2 with athletes. Lauffer implements the 4-1-4-1 with three drills that focus on the movements and responsibilities of the back line, midfield line and strikers. He ends the defensive segment by covering defensive tactics and responsibilities for the team as a whole.

Offensively, Lauffer illustrates how simple it is for the 4-1-4-1 to be adjusted to a 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and 4-2-3-1 depending on game situations. Along with its adaptability, another attacking advantage of the 4-1-4-1 is the space it creates for supporting players to make deep, penetrating runs between and behind the defense. Additionally, Lauffer presents a drill he uses for the central players to increase their vision and awareness in order to better utilize the up-back-through passing pattern and movement off of the ball.

Finally, he brings it back to the whole picture again and identifies ideal scenarios that should be developed in a game, like creating 2v1 opportunities in wide areas with overlapping runs and attacking from deep positions.

The 3-5-2 is an exciting system because of the strength in the midfield (5 players), the ability to attack from wide positions as well as internally, and the good numbers it presents on defense. Coach Berticelli takes you on a guided tour of the 3-5-2 system. He provides an excellent overview of the 3-5-2 and highlights the strengths and weaknesses the system presents. He also presents training exercises to use for each area of the field (for the defenders, the mid-fielders, and the front runners) that will help your athletes practice their positions and make the 3-5-2 a more effective system for your team!
