The Basics of Indoor Lacrosse

In this instructional DVD, Johnny Mouradian uses an on-field presentation to introduce the game of indoor or box lacrosse. Indoor lacrosse features up tempo read and react situations. Shots, passes and rebounds come at a high rate quickly developing stick skills and other lacrosse skills. Players learn every aspect of lacrosse, as they all play offense, defense and transition. Mouradian teaches skills and breakdown drills that will get any athlete familiar with indoor lacrosse. He shares teaching points on taking advantage of the boards as well as tuning your stick for speed and accuracy. He also shares the importance of the ready four position and gives tips on effective use of the cradle. Shooting fundamentals and passes-both overhand and backhand-are covered as well. A former lacrosse standout at Ithaca College, Johnny Mouradian has made National Lacrosse League headlines since 1992 when he joined the Buffalo Bandits for five-year stretch as general manager. During his years with the Bandits, he led the team to league championships three times and made the playoffs every season. Mouradian added two more championship titles to his list of accomplishments with his next team, the Toronto Rock, who finished at the top of the league in 1999 and 2000. Mouradian remains the only general manager in the NLL to win five championships, a distinction that led to his 2009 induction into the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame. All Access Lacrosse Practice with Rick Sowell

On the practice field, the team goes through a series of pre-practice drills and warm-ups before getting into the heart of practice. Day 1: See a variety of drills including: small group defense drills working on communication, ground balls under pressure, high frequency shooting, passing on the run, 1-on-1 alley work to beat a defender, and scoring from behind the net. The team also engages in a full field scrimmage with a focus on playing hard, dodging, clearing and running plays under pressure. At the end of practice, Sowell works on extra man and man down situations. Day 2: Day 2 drills include clearing, shooting, and ground balls. You will also see the team working on their zone offense and zone defense with a focus on quick ball movement, staying active, and having patience. Again, the team works on extra man and man down situations - concentrating on the face-off and clearing. Day 3: Much of this practice focuses on what Sowell expects to see from their next opponent. As preparation, he runs full field 4-on-3, 5-on-4 drills, as well as half field 4-on-4 drills that work on "picking and popping" and defending the pick. Finally, see a full field scrimmage using plays and scenarios meant to prepare both the offense and defense for their upcoming opponent.
