Championship Team Defenses!
with Jeff Sauer, former University of Wisconsin Head Coach; 2X National Championship CoachJeff Sauer draws upon his vast collegiate and international coaching experience to describe man-to-man, rotational, and 1-2-2 trap defenses. Coach Sauer's man-to-man defense emphasizes proper rotations when your defense gets beaten in the defensive zone. His rotational defense instruction focuses on taking the offense out of scoring position by creating 4-on-3 situations below the face-off circles in the defensive zone. The 1-2-2 trap instruction begins in the offensive zone, demonstrating the importance of angling players toward the boards as the puck is advanced. Each defense is demonstrated on-ice, using game highlights to reinforce proper rotations. 1999. 38 minutes.

15 High Tempo Practice Drills
with Shawn Walsh, coaching legend, former University of Maine Head CoachShawn Walsh designs and demonstrates a series of highly competitive hockey drills to keep your practices intense and to utilize the full ice surface. The drill work is divided into three segments: flow drills, situational drills, and team drills. Flow drills warm-up your players, develop skills, and develop timing. Situational drills include many of the match-up situations that players will encounter during games. Team drills feature more end-to-end action and thus are great for teaching transition. 2000. 60 minutes.

15 Cross-Ice Games
with Bill Beaney, Head Coach, Middlebury College 8X D-III NCAA Champions; and Tim Gerrish, former Union College Head Coach These competitive hockey games use small groups of players, small areas of ice, and short shifts to create intense, game-like situations and ultimately a high level of play. All of these drills take place inside the blue line and are played cross-ice to create a small ice surface. Coaches Beaney and Gerrish use this chaos with a purpose approach to enhance player skills and improve hockey sense. The games are modified by putting the goals in various positions, using more than one puck, limiting where players are allowed to move, and creating and eliminating rules. 2000. 38 minutes.

Controlled and Aggressive Forechecking Systems
with Blaise MacDonald, UMASS-Lowell Head CoachCoach Blaise MacDonald shares two types of forechecks - a controlled high-pressure forecheck, which is used when the opponent has established control of the puck, and an aggressive forecheck where you hunt down the opponent and try and take away the puck. Starting with the "High" controlled forecheck, MacDonald demonstrates a 1-2-2 system that will give your team a strong defense in the middle of the ice and attacks the pass. The second system is a 5-Man High Pressure. This is based higher up in the neutral zone and tries to keep the puck in the offensive end. The 5-Man is ideal when you are protecting a lead or during a line change. MacDonald's aggressive forecheck systems are the Left Wing Lock and the Aggressive L Forecheck. The Left Wing Lock forces everything up the boards, which takes away the easy pass. The L Forecheck puts a lot of pressure on the defensemen, which forces them to make passes toward center ice allowing you a greater opportunity to steal the passes for easy scores. MacDonald details each system on the whiteboard and then demonstrates it on ice with members of his squad. MacDonald includes four drills that complement each system while working on the skills and tactical strategies needed to execute each system. Turn up the pressure on your opponents this season. 52 minutes. 2009.
