Cycling Drills to Maximize Attack Options
with Hal Tearse,
Coach in Chief for Minnesota Hockey,
Providence Academy (MN) Head Coach, 5x State Championship Coach

Put pressure on the defense and create more scoring opportunities using this effective cycling progression.

Five-time Minnesota State Championship coach Hal Tearse shows you how to build your team's cycling technique through an easy to use 7-phase teaching progression. In each phase, Tearse shares with you the why and how of the technique and demonstrates drills to maximize your team's scoring potential. Watch as Tearse coaches his players through the drills providing critical coaching points that will make your team proficient and successful when cycling.

The seven phase progression includes:

  • Indirect Passing - Teach your athletes the technical skills they need to successfully forehand or backhand pass the puck into the dead zone.
  • Basic Cycling - A two player drill that builds the cycle process off of the indirect pass and focuses on reading and reacting to the options that cycling creates.
  • Adding Pressure - Show players the need for an indirect pass and force them to clear a defender to get to the net.
  • Three Player Cycle - A third offensive player is brought into play creating full possession for multiple option offense out of the cycle.
  • Double Pressure - Add a second defender to continue moving towards game situation play.
  • Underneath the Net - Create width and space by cycling from underneath the net. This provides your puck carrier three excellent options for initiating the attack and opportunities to shoot on a moving goalie.
  • Defensemen Help - Adding a defenseman to your attack creates chaos for the defense and creates an odd-man situation for your offense.
Tearse brings over 38 years of coaching experience, from mites to college, to this hockey video. More than just a simple drill video, Tearse shares coaching insights and advice throughout. Get to the net and create more scoring opportunities with this simple but powerful cycling teaching progression.

Cover: drills for offensive creativity
Drills for Offensive Creativity
with Mark Carlson,
Cedar Rapids Roughriders, USHL Head Coach

Coach Carlson, the USHL's Coach of the Year in 2004-05, presents 15 important drills and details for exciting offensive hockey. His rebuilding efforts produced the best record and first Clark Cup title in team history. His presentation begins with the 2-on-0 timing drill. This drill can help develop puck support, timing and under-handling the puck. Starting at the center of the rink, the Double Chip 2-on-0 drill combines shots on goal and using boards with a purpose. Carlson demonstrates drills to work on escape and transition in a 2-on-0 setting. Short and long passes are the key to the four player 2-on-0 drill. A favorite early practice drill is the Quick 3-on-0 drill, which incorporates the Mohawk turn and transition. Multiple repetitions are produced for the defensemen and forwards in the Breakout Options drill. Features of the drill are dumping it in the other corner, reverse breakouts by defensemen and making D to D pass. All the drills are reinforced with footage from Roughrider practice. These drills are demanding and push players to work on all fundamental skills need for winning hockey. Carlson believes these drills will help you move the puck quicker, create exciting plays and create more offense for your team.

Cover: life after the rush - attacking the net
Life After the Rush - Attacking the Net
with Nate Leaman,
Union College (NY) Head Ice Hockey Coach;
US National Under-18 team Assistant Coach

In Life After the Rush, Coach Leaman, through the part-part-whole method and repetition, demonstrates methods to attack the net after making a rush attempt. This DVD is broken down in three parts. Part 1 demonstrates different ways to attacking as a 5-man group using a triangle set up. Puck carriers must be quick to their feet, execute strong 1-on-1 moves, and not show the puck. Reading the first man to the puck will strengthen the attack on the goal. Leaman makes excellent use of on-ice footage to show cutbacks. Part 2 deals with the first player to the puck, his foot movement down low and the chip. These drills allow for a lot of creativity behind the net. Featured is three-man rotation and F3 jamming the net to create time and space for the puck carrier. Part 3 focuses on creating chaos in the offensive zone. Rollouts into an umbrella formation show how your offense can spread out the opponent and get them away from the net. This DVD is an in-depth look into aggressive offensive play following the rush and will give your team the tools for scoring success.
