"SmartCore" Training
featuring Staffan Elgelid
PT, Ph.D., CFT; Nazareth College of Rochester Associate Professor of Physical Therapy

The next evolution of core training is here!

"SmartCore" is the development and evolution of traditional core training. SmartCore is about controlled mobility of the lumbar spine and pelvis to improve performance, decrease injury risk and to live better!

In this presentation, Staffan Elgelid takes you through the cutting edge movements for smart core training that allows the participant to experience different movement positions of the pelvis and lumbar spine which combine to train the body and the mind better!

In this first-of-its kind DVD, you'll learn how smart core training moves beyond traditional core training, which is focused on a non-moving stable core. SmartCore adds spine and pelvis movement while moving the extremities with the core in different positions. It is very important to first master basic core training before moving to the smart core training.

Elgelid divides SmartCore training into four areas:

  • Foundation: Basic movement patterns that explore varying spine and pelvis movements.
  • Static: Core sequences with the spine and pelvis in various static positions.
  • Dynamic: Core sequences with the spine and pelvis in continuous motion. This dynamic sequence is essential for athletes since the spine and pelvis are not in a fixed position during athletics.
  • Agility: Prepare for game situations with dynamic sequences with the addition of non-habitual movements of the extremities.
Within each area, Elgelid demonstrates multiple movement patterns and options, moving from the basics into more complex combined movement patterns. Throughout, Elgelid offers tips on identifying an exercise that is too advanced an athlete.

Whether it be a physical therapy setting, sport performance setting, or basic training for well being, the smart core will afford the participant better movement and less chance of injury!

Creating and Managing a Championship Culture
featuring Kelly Inouye-Perez,
UCLA Head Softball Coach;
2010 NCAA Champions

Kelly Inouye-Perez led the UCLA softball program to their 11th NCAA championship in 2010. Beginning her fifth season as the Bruins' head coach, 2011 marks her 23rd straight year in Westwood, having joined the UCLA softball program as a freshman player in 1989. Inouye-Perez's involvement in Bruin softball is highlighted by seven NCAA Championships and eight Pac-10 titles as player and coach.Coaching is communication. And competitive excellence involves more than the collective skills of your individual players. In this exclusive clinic, Coach Inouye-Perez provides specific guidance on how you can enhance your team's competitive edge and create a championship culture through proven communication strategies.

She reveals five key areas, which include: establishing a clear vision; utilizing effective language; defining each player's roles; creating accountability; and securing enthusiastic team buy-in. Drawing directly from her own extensive experience, she also shares tips on utilizing different communication channels, techniques for getting your team back on track, defining who your core players are, and discovering who you can rely on to help get everyone together and focused.

In managing the game, Coach Inouye-Perez breaks down the communication aspects of competition into three primary areas: Pre-Game Preparation, Game-Time Clarity, and Post-Game Meeting:

  • Pre-game preparation covers offense, defense, warm-ups, pitching, team duties, and in-game expectations.
  • Game-time clarity involves establishing a team focal point, creating a dugout routine, and managing strategy.
  • Post-game meetings can often devolve into a redundant rehash, with the coach simply stating the obvious. Coach Inouye-Perez shows how you can turn the meeting around, get the entire team involved, and seize on this moment to create a heightened opportunity for learning and improvement.
Creating and Managing a Championship Culture is a fundamental resource for every softball coach at every level, and one that is worth watching again at the beginning of each season as you refine, reestablish, and reinforce your own championship culture.

Winning the Mental Moments: Developing Team Toughness in the Clutch!
with Chris Stankovich, Ph.D.;
athletic counselor and a national expert in sport performance science

As a coach, it's challenging to incorporate mental toughness training into your coaching philosophy - that's where Winning the Mental Moments can help.

Mental toughness is not a genetic trait athletes are simply born with. Mental toughness can be developed by learning specific skills designed to help with confidence, focus, motivation and resiliency. When athletes improve their level of mental toughness, they often reach their full athletic potential, which in turn leads to maximum team success.

Similar to the importance of physical training and technical skill instruction, mental toughness development is a crucial aspect to fulfilling athletic and team potential. Simply put, athletes who are mentally tough outperform similarly talented athletes, and as a result, optimize their athletic abilities and potential.

Winning the Mental Moments is a unique scientifically developed educational system created by Dr. Chris Stankovich that will provide you with the skills and techniques needed to effectively help your team reach their full athletic potential.

Winning the Mental Moments will teach coaches:

  • How to get kids to "buy in" to the idea of improving their mental toughness and disregard myths about only "problem athletes" benefiting from mental skills training
  • A systematic approach to helping kids develop their mental toughness by following a specific pre-season, pre-game, during-game, and post-game framework
  • Specific performance enhancement techniques including goal setting, focus development, imagery, cue words and much moreIdeas to help kids with positive attitude development, motivation, and life skills enhancement
  • Techniques to help with stress regulation and resiliency

Unlike other coaching programs that offer general theories and applications, Winning the Mental Moments will provide you with strategic methods to help your kids play their best - especially when pressure is high.

Take your program to the next level by helping your team "Win the Mental Moments!"
