This presentation is a valuable tool for teaching drive block progression. According to Coach Hughes, the answer to successful blocking is teaching the progression of skills needed "in the trenches". The mental approach to playing on the line, teamed with skills, is the theme of this excellent DVD. Hughes' "backfield forward" concept teaches players to execute based on what the backfield is doing. Many of the fundamentals are applicable in the man blocking progression as well as the zone progression. The steps taught are lead step, flat step and the drop step. Hughes starts the progression by analyzing the stance. Hand placement and balance help to teach the two-point stance, followed by "One step" progression, followed by two steps with one or two commands. Firm foot, the fourth step, drives the right knee down to the ground and the progression concludes with the full go - a combination of all steps into live action. Finishing the block is taught in several ways and extends the block progression. The same approach is taken to teaching down blocks, cut off blocks and blocking people in space and how that translates into zone combinations. This DVD captures zone blocking combinations derived from the drive block progression and how the zone read play is installed. The zone read play is a double option play that has evolved through the years. The C.W. Post staff has gone to zone plays because of multiple defensive fronts and formations. The zone concept also provides a solid foundation for offensive lineman, and allows for multiple backfield alignments. The last advantage is that by teaching drive blocking, every scheme is covered against every front. The theory is that by making the defense slide horizontally creates creases vertically. Two consistencies are evident in this scheme. One, the back must cross the face of the quarterback, and the aiming point adjusts to tighter to the butt of the guard. After snap from center, the quarterback flips his hips and establishes the line of vision to the defender outside the tackle. The running back aligns himself to the angle of the attack after dropping a heel for timing. The offensive line has simple rules for the zone read. Against a 4-2 defense, the covered/uncovered rule comes into play. The read for the quarterback will be determined after the snap when facing the 3-3 defense. Coach Hughes uses practice footage to demonstrate the footwork and fundamentals needed. Zone block progression includes head up, inside and outside before adding the linebacker in. Drills are run 2-on-1 or 2-on-2 to stress these techniques. These zone combo drills work on technique as well as the scheme used.
