FD-02578A: with John Matsko,
Kansas City Chiefs (NFL) Offensive Line Coach

A veteran of 16+ NFL seasons, Coach John Matsko shares his philosophy and rich experience as an offensive line coach. Coach Matsko begins this DVD with fundamentals of offensive line play and states his main objective of keeping your assignment from making the play. Matsko evaluates according to this objective and his lineman have recorded a high of 62% efficiency in the past. He uses both a line grade and an individual grade to keep players accountable for their production and execution. Secondly, his players have an attitude about them that exudes toughness and hard play. Keys to playing the offensive line are being physical, aggressive, and attacking. At the same time Coach Matsko teaches players to be under control and in balance. He describes the 1.5 yard line of scrimmage as the "Battle Ground". Relative position for linemen is extremely important; square and keeping the butt to the quarterback is essential. Other key elements to successful line play are the power step, strong hand, hip, shoulder, and leg, leading with the hip, kick slide step, and keeping your base staying square. An excellent teacher of hand usage, Coach Matsko examines training the hands and striking a specific target on the defender. Coach Matsko creatively substitutes "live" demonstration in this DVD for game footage, as coaches from the audience get involved. This interaction allows you to clearly see the teaching points. Drills and schemes are also diagrammed on the overhead. To finish this fine presentation, discussion is centered on the lean to, mirror dodge, and pass sets. Pass sets are set to the alignment of the defender, stepping with the near foot. Every coach and player can learn valuable tools from Coach Matsko and implement them into their game. Make a statement this season with power, strength, and efficiency from your offensive line!

FD-02578B: with John Matsko,
Kansas City Chiefs (NFL) Offensive Line Coach

In this DVD, Coach John Matsko proves that outstanding line play does not "just happen". Attention to fundamentals, details, and technique are "the path that leads to success" in the trenches of the NFL. This DVD is a continuation of the excellent Perfecting Pass Protection Fundamentals, Volume I presentation by Coach Matsko. He begins this presentation by demonstrating head-up hand contact by doing it "a thousand" times a day. Repetition is the fuel that turns fundamental work into effective game-day execution. One key fundamental of line play is relative position. Once a defender gets to your shoulder, you are in trouble. The "three technique" teaches lineman to execute a low power step and maintain relative position. To reinforce the point, Coach Matsko cites the skill and technique of specific defensive players in the NFL. He teaches the Chiefs to step right foot or left foot to the crotch. Against quick pass rushers the kick and sink is a valuable technique for offensive linemen. Pass sets vs. wide rushers put lineman in a 3-step drop. The key in run block is to control the near tip of the end's shoulder pad. In the 5-step drop, Matsko teaches players to set for the speed, and use the kick and sink technique. To protect the quarterback, offensive linemen are responsible for keeping the width of the pocket. Though similar, Coach Matsko explains the differences between the 5-step drop and the 7-step drop using diagrams on the overhead. If you seek rapid improvement on your offensive line, this is for you!
