Technique and Drills for the Multiple 3-4 Defense 4-Pack
FD-03953A: with Steve Fex, Coppell (TX) HS Assistant Coach;
Member of 2001 University of Washington coaching staff (2001 Rose Bowl Champions)

Maximize the talents of your defensive line in the Mutiple 3-4 Defense.

The defensive line is the lifeblood of any defensive unit, especially in the 3-4 Defense. Steve Fex clearly describes, in detail, the specific techniques and drills required to develop a dominant defensive line. His use of PowerPoint, practice demonstrations, and game film will give you clear understanding of what is needed in coaching the defensive front.

Coach Fex clearly outlines how to create an active and athletic defensive lineman. He includes everything from lineman characteristics, alignment, stance to base techniques, pass rush and more.

He begins by explaining what it takes to play defensive line. From there he describes the alignments and stance that are necessary to be successful. Using on-field drills and game film, he describes the proper techniques of blow delivery, getting off blocks, splitting the double team and the pass rush.

Defensive Line Technique and Drills for the Multiple 3-4 Defense is a great compliment to Coach Steve Fex's other DVD's on the Multiple 3-4 Defense.

53 minutes. 2011.

FD-03953B: with Kirk McBride,
Coppel (TX) High School Assistant Coach/Linebackers

Kirk McBride provides an in-depth study of how to teach linebacker play within the 3-4 defensive scheme.

Using whiteboard diagrams and on the field demonstration, Coach McBride gives you eight drills you can incorporate into your daily practice routine that will teach your linebackers to get to the football quickly and consistently.

The first set of drills show proper power angles and stance and start techniques that demonstrate the importance of a balanced linebacker. The next four drills teach linebackers how to read four different types of flow, establish mesh, and how to work inside out when approaching the ball carrier with leverage.

McBride includes Scrape and Flow drills to teach your linebackers how to gain leverage and attack the flow of a offense, which even includes a variation for taking on cut blocks. McBride takes an extra step to help you see the results of these drills and techniques on the playing field through actual game footage.

Tough, sound, and fast linebacker play is essential in the 3-4 defense and with these techniques your players will learn to take the drill to the field in the same fashion presented in this video.

Inside Linebacker Technique and Drills for the Multiple 3-4 Defense is a great compliment to Coach Fex's other DVD's on the Multiple 3-4 Defense. It is also a great stand alone DVD for any coach in any defensive system.

86 minutes. 2011.

FD-03953C: with Mike DeWitt,
Coppell (TX) High School Defensive Coordinator / OLB Coach

Outside Linebackers are a combination of a safety's speed, defensive lineman's size, and a middle linebacker's attack mentality.

In this detailed instructional football DVD, Coppell High School's Outside Linebackers Coach Mike DeWitt, presents essential techniques and 10 key drills to help create a high caliber outside linebacker.

Coach Dewitt's drills will show you:

  • How to attack a blocker to better gain outside leverage to defend the outside and reduce the C gap seam.
  • How to shed the trap block and still be in position to make the tackle in the backfield on a bouncing RB.
  • How to look through offensive lineman to back read and maintain position for cut back while not creating a running seam for the RB.
  • How to fight a crack back block and maintain outside leverage to defend the outside run.
  • How to redirect a receiver moving though your box and zone to make it tougher on the QBs timing.
Outside Lineback Technique and Drills for the Multiple 3-4 Defense is a great compliment to Coach Fex's other DVD's on the Multiple 3-4 Defense. Even if you are not running the 3-4 defense, the outside linebacker fundamentals and techniques presented are relevant for any defense that wants to build championship outside linebackers.

53 minutes. 2011.

FD-03953D: with Steve Fex, Coppell (TX) HS Assistant Coach;
Member of 2001 University of Washington coaching staff (2001 Rose Bowl Champions)

Your defensive backfield must include more than just pass defenders. They must be able to transition from pass defense into run defense quickly. Steve Fex clearly describes the specific techniques and drills needed to develop physical cornerbacks and safeties in the 3-4 Defense. Using PowerPoint, drills filmed in practice, and actual game film, Coach Fex delivers a clear understanding of what is needed to coach defensive backs.

These drills and techniques are primarily built around Cover 2 coverage but Fex also describes how they fit into a Cover 3.

The Cornerback in the Multiple 3-4 Defense
Fex demonstrates 10 drills that are important for all cornerbacks. He uses practice film to demonstrate his teaching progression that will improve your DBs ability to change direction, get off blocks, play the ball in the air, and attack the ball carrier.

The Safety in the Multiple 3-4 Defense
Learn five drills that lay the foundation for great safety play in the 3-4 defense. These drills work on backpedal, defeating stalk blocks, tackling technique, route disruption and rolling your coverage. With these few simple drills your players will develop all the skills required to make plays on game day.

One of the key drills in this video is the One High Safety Drill. Fex shows you the keys to shifting at the snap from a two high safety look into a one high safety coverage. This transition will allow your secondary to give the same two high safety look on every down and then roll your coverage on the snap to confuse your opponent.

Fex finishes the video with his "UP" tackling philosophy, which stresses the key factors in becoming a good tackler. His UP tackling progression concentrates on; eyes UP, chest UP, club UP & speed UP. You can improve tackling and reduce injuries with this simple UP tackling philosophy.

Defensive Back Technique and Drills for the Multiple 3-4 Defense is a great compliment to Coach Fex's other DVD's on the Multiple 3-4 Defense. It is also a great stand alone DVD to all coaches for many other defensive systems.

Cover: stopping the run with 4-3 over / cover 4 defense
Stopping the Run with 4-3 Over / Cover 4 Defense
with by Pat Narduzzi,
Michigan State University Defensive Coordinator; 2010 Big Ten Co-Champions

Pat Narduzzi has elevated Michigan State's defense to one of the top run-stopping units in the country. Using their base over defense, Michigan State's defense allowed only one 100-yard rusher the entire 2010 season.

In this DVD, Narduzzi outlines his philosophy and principles for stopping the run by using a simple base defense. His "chalkboard" discussion shows how to keep it simple, which allows the defense to play fast and physical.

He demonstrates how using the over front gets nine men in the box, allows linebackers to run to the ball, and easily adjusts to any offensive scheme. With simple front adjustments, your opponent's favorite run plays can be stuffed at the line of scrimmage.

Narduzzi uses game footage to show how Michigan State's defense "builds a wall" at the line of scrimmage to stop the run. The sideline and end zone clips give you a great visual of how this defense allows for aggressive play while maintaining gap integrity.

The 4-3 over defense presented by Coach Narduzzi is sound against any scheme, easy to learn, and will no doubt allow your defense to play fast and physical.

Cover: aggressive 4-3 defense: setting up the system
Aggressive 4-3 Defense: Setting Up the System
with Chris Ash,
University of Wisconsin Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs Coach;
2010 Big Ten Co-champions

Chris Ash's philosophy behind the 4-3 Defense can be summed up in one word--Aggressive. In this overview of the 4-3, you get the basic formations, alignments and coverages of the defense that helped lead Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl and a share of the 2010 Big Ten Championship.

Ash describes the importance of being aggressive and hustling on every single play with a simple phrase--"Put the Ball Down." It is an attitude and mindset that dictates a readiness to play against anyone, anywhere at any time, no matter what the game situation.

This 4-3 Defense is zeroes in on five objectives:

  • Keep the opponent off the scoreboard.
  • We will stop the run. Make the offense one dimensional.
  • Must minimize big plays.
  • Must be great tacklers.
  • Create takeaways and score. It's all about the ball.
Using an in-depth power point presentation, Ash details every position in the defense. He explains simple terminology for alignments and gap responsibilities of the linemen, run fit concepts for linebackers (Stack, Bow, Boss and 4-Way) and man and zone coverages for the secondary.

Ash uses practice footage to show several drills that are run every day at the beginning of practice. These "defensive openers" emphasize techniques of pursuit, tackling, interception returns, stripping the ball and recovering fumbles.

To complete the package, this DVD includes a bonus PDF that can be accessed on your computer and printed for your personal use. The PDF includes:

  • Descriptions for different kinds of man and zone coverages
  • Terminology for offensive personnel groups
  • A sample defensive play call sheet
  • Player communication responsibilities in the huddle
  • Detailed outlines of everything covered in the video
Order now and lay the foundation for installing this hard hitting, relentless defense into your program.
