Cover: 3-out, 2-in zone offense
3-Out, 2-In Zone Offense
with Jamie Dixon,
University of Pittsburgh Head Coach;
2004 Big East Coach of the Year

Attacking the zone starts with getting the ball inside the zone. Coach Dixon puts a premium on post players that can catch, pass and make plays in traffic. The first drill is a shooting drill from the baseline to simulate playing against a zone. Priorities are catch, rim, partner, throw opposite and dive. Perimeter breakdown is accomplished by playing 3-on-0 on the perimeter. The point, wings and corners can all be filled by guards. Penetration is a big part of attacking zones and Dixon teaches one hard dribble and jump stop into the zone. In a 5-on-0 alignment, the zone offense is demonstrated using many of the options that Dixon teaches. The short corner is a vulnerable spot on the floor for the defense and can be exploited in this offense. The high post is also an excellent area for the offense. The on ball screen on the perimeter can create penetration into zone gaps causing coverage problems for the defense. Set plays are used early in the possession to create movement and flows into the main zone offensive attack. The benefit of this zone offense is that it takes advantage of areas where the zone is weak and makes it work by using ball and player movement.

Cover: mark gottfried: attacking the zone
Mark Gottfried: Attacking the Zone
with Mark Gottfried,
University of Alabama Head Coach

Mark Gottfried will never be called passive against zone defenses! Attacking the heart of the zone, inside/out, is the goal of his offense. The keys are ball movement, man movement and penetrate as the ball moves from sideline to sideline. Gottfried believes that his perimeter players must be hard to guard and find the gap between two defenders. After one or two ball reversals, guards look to "knife the zone" by driving gaps. Post players are taught to be aggressive and move hard against the zone. Post players must occupy defenders along the baseline by flashing and posting up. One feature of Gotfried's zone style is attacking from behind from the short corner. The Double "O" is an alignment with two post low and three perimeter players on the outside. Another look is the 1-3-1 set, with the high post player acting as the "hub of the wheel." Hi/low action, corner passes and short corner opportunities are available in this attack. Set plays are good weapons against zone defenses. The 3-2 zone presents a different look, but can be countered with an offensive overload attack.

Cover: bob huggins: the 'dive & fill' zone offense
Bob Huggins: The 'Dive & Fill' Zone Offense
with Bob Huggins,
University of West Virginia Head Coach;
Conference USA "Coach of the Decade" (U. Cincinnati)

Bob Huggins' zone offense attacks the most vulnerable area on the floor: the high post. This offense uses the "dive and fill" concept to make the guts of the zone work. In this on the floor clinic setting, Coach Huggins uses four players to demonstrate the basic action of the offense. Primary areas of the floor used are the high post, short corner and wings. A key point for the high post player is to gain position under the guard. When the ball gets to this area, the offense has a 3-on-2 advantage. The basic alignment is a 2-1-2 set with the best, most active player in the high post. With great detail, Huggins shows the three-man rotation along the baseline when the ball is reversed. This is an excellent feature of the offense because it frees a 3-point shooter in the corners. Huggins demonstrates two options to get the ball into the high post or to an open shooter on the opposite wing, as well as how to create space for a lob at the rim. Once the action becomes 5-on-5, Huggins shows how to create mismatches against the zone. Options covered include the ball screen, the dribble pull (which opens the corner for the best shooter) and a corner action.
