Don Showalter: Continuity Ball Screen Offense
with Don Showalter,
Mid Prairie High (IA) Boy's Head Basketball Coach,
over 500 career wins;
2x USA Basketball Developmental Coach of the Year (2009-10)

Don Showalter reveals the offense that propelled the USA Basketball U16 and U17 teams to gold medals in world competition. This offense is simple enough to run at any level of competition yet effective at keeping defenses on their heels. It is simple to install and players enjoy the freedom that it allows.

Coach Showalter uses on court demonstrators to walk you through his "20" continuity offense which starts in a 1-4 high set and utilizes a ball screen on the wing to get players into what he calls the "kill area." He focuses on the details that make this offense work including the permanent pivot foot, how and where to set the ball screen, and the screen and roll versus screen and go.

Emphasis is placed on reading the defense as the ball handler comes off of the screen and Showalter teaches the reads that must be made against teams that:

  • Go behind the screen
  • Hedge on the screen
  • Double the screen
  • Switch the screen
  • Show early on the screen
Showalter also provides a number of variations designed to take advantage of tendencies established by the offense as the game progresses. The Pop Series, 21, Horns, and the Shuffle Cut are all demonstrated on court.

Finally, Showalter demonstrates how the offense can be used against a zone defense. The basic continuity remains the same but the reads change depending on the movement of the zone.

In an added bonus, Showalter takes time to provide some significant insight valuable to coaches at any level. He discusses the importance of communication and the challenges of getting players to play hard all of the time. He details the top 10 mistakes that high school coaches make and the four "C's" (Choices, Comfort Zone, Compete, and Communication) that he emphasizes with his teams.

This DVD provides coaches with all of the tools necessary to implement this highly successful offense at any level.

Jim Calhoun: Defensive Philosophy and Zone Offense Principles
with Jim Calhoun;
3x National Championship Coach; Member of Naismith Hall of Fame,

A championship team must have a good defense to contain their opponents.

In this video, see how Jim Calhoun's four basic defensive principles can help you build a championship defense. Using on court demonstration, Coach Calhoun takes you through his defensive philosophies and a variety of drills that will disrupt any offense from running smoothly. These drills have enabled his teams to consistently rank among the top defensive teams in the country.

Calhoun then takes you through his principles for how to run an effective zone offense. Learn how he uses a variety of player movements to attack odd and even front zone defenses. Concepts covered include drag dribbles, shooting drill work, and odd front zone offense concepts. These offensive sets will allow you to dictate your offensive match-ups even against zones.

In addition to the on court demonstrations, Calhoun takes you through the coaching philosophies that have aided him in becoming one of the nation's premiere coaches. The "culture you create" is the key to developing your program and developing practice and tactical plans that reflect not only the personnel of your team, but the values that you have as a coach.

Donnie Jones: Up-Tempo Transition Offense
with Donnie Jones,
University of Central Florida Head Men's Basketball Coach,
Former assistant coach at University of Florida during UF's back-to-back national title run.

In this fast-paced, instructional DVD from Championship Productions, Coach Donnie Jones shares the strategies that laid the groundwork for Florida's back-to-back national title runs. Coach Jones takes viewers through the seven build-up drills and 12 sets that form the core of his up-tempo offense, focusing on fundamentals-passing, catching, talking, shooting and dribbling-as the key to improving play and putting points on the board.

Using strategies termed "beginnings " and "endings," Coach Jones demonstrates how to push the ball up-court for a quick score ("beginnings) and how to reset the offense after a missed shot (endings). His detailed discussions of various "pick and roll" options, which is his primary transition offense, emphasize the correct use of screens, spacing and positioning. He also demonstrates several different versions of the primary pick and roll, which can be used to break an opponent's defensive tempo. Coach Jones also shares his "musts to winning'-great defense, unselfish ball handling, playing hard, effective rebounding and mental/physical toughness.

A unique component of the DVD is a question and answer period at the end of the instructional portion of Coach Jones' presentation. Learn even more about implementing this results-oriented offense from the answers Coach Jones gives to tough questions from his audience.

All Access Notre Dame Practice with Mike Brey
with Mike Brey,
Notre Dame Head Coach;
3x Big East Coach of the Year;
2010-11 Associated Press National Coach of the Year

Having been mentored as an assistant coach under two of the greatest coaches of all time--Mike Krzyzewski and Morgan Wooten--Mike Brey now brings his unique knowledge and experience to you.

In this All Access Practice DVD set, you will see Coach Breys' philosophy on offense and defense. You will learn the drills he uses to not only warm up players, but get them lots of shots in the process. You will gain insight on practice planning, spacing, and defending screens. You will see how Coach Brey sets up his 4-Out 1-In offense, how quickly he progresses to 5-on-5 in his practice and how he teaches his players to pride themselves in getting defensive stops.

You'll see how Brey uses sets to start and keep players moving through the motion offense. The key here is that players become familiar with the workings of the offense and each other. Brey then adds options that the team can run to take advantage of opponents. He includes competitive shooting drills for both the guards and posts, which become incorporated in motion drills. The players move and shoot according to the calls made by coach. You'll learn spacing, timing, player movement and ball reversals and the need for players to develop patience and allow options to develop to their benefit.

You'll also see Coach Brey and the Notre Dame coaching staff reviewing film of the third practice of their season. The coaches discuss what the players do and don't do well. The coaches present the practice film clips to the players and use it to teach the players the right way to play with all the freedom the Notre Dame offense provides.

You will learn how to improve your players' offensive productivity by giving them freedom to make reads and plays, and get a refreshing new perspective on open-minded coaching that includes learning from what your players do well and trial and error in scrimmages.

Incorporate the methods used by Mike Brey and have your players ready to compete from the opening tip.

Seth Greenberg: Attacking Zone Offense and Plays
with Seth Greenberg,
Virginia Tech Head Coach; 2x ACC Coach of the Year

Two-time ACC Coach of the Year Seth Greenberg takes to the court to explain how to attack both odd- and even-front zone defenses, providing the concepts that will allow your team to play to their strengths.

An effective zone offense must:

  • start with the transition game
  • must have players attacking the offensive glass
  • players must not settle for jump shots
  • there must be ball movement and player movement
  • must screen the zone
  • players must be able to shot fake and ball fake
  • the players must be shot ready
Coach Greenberg's transition zone offense attacks with the dribble in order to flatten out the zone and utilize ball screens. He believes teams should "fly to the glass" while pursuing offensive rebounds. Greenberg introduces his "flash and roll" that features "pull" and "drag" dribbles that create multiple open areas and diving and sealing opportunities. He shows two deadly quick hitters that are very simple, yet effective at providing not only the open post feed, but also the open shot from behind the arc.

Greenberg completes his zone attack arsenal with a two-guard offense designed to attack the 1-3-1 zone defense. In this offense, which is his variation of the famous "T-Game" offense, Greenberg wants his guards to play mid-point to mid-point, making it easier to attack the gray areas of the 1-3-1 and helps avoid being trapped on the sideline.

The key to Coach Greenberg's success at attacking zones lies in his philosophy of getting the ball to your best players in position to score. These simple rules and concepts will allow your team to play instinctively and successfully defeat zone defenses.
