Assistant coaches show how to utilize backup players to run the opponents offense

Coach Dunphy and his staff, while preparing for what Buffalo does, really focus on getting their players and their team better in the areas they need improvement. The setting then moves to the film room to breakdown the upcoming opponent and then moves to the practice floor where everything that was identified as an area of concern is address with the players through drills.

During the practice, Coach Dunphy and his staff, go through some excellent 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 drills to work on their post offense and defense, which was a problem in the Buffalo game. These drills are good for the perimeter player to use/defend cuts and screens and work on situations such as Hi-Lo, Isolations, and all different types of screens.

They then moved on to the Duke defense, and their strengths and weaknesses.

Practice starts off with a full court layup drill that allows players to work on their fundamentals and conditioning. Offensive breakdown drills are next as Dunphy goes over what scoring actions he thinks will be successful against Duke. Dunphy then switches the focus of the practice to defense by going over Duke's plays and how he wants to slow them down by focusing on their favorite half court sets and showing how he wants them defended in Temple's shell drill.

At the end of Disc 3, Coach Dunphy gives a review of their victory over Duke and who they got the win over the 5th ranked Blue Devils.

All Access Basketball Practice with Matt Bollant
with Matt Bollant,
University of Illinois Head Women's Basketball Coach;
former University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Head Women's Basketball Coach;
4x Horizon League Coach of the Year (2012, 2011, 2009, 2008);
back-to-back 30+ win seasons (2010-12); Kay Yow National Coach of the Year 2011

Learn proven techniques and drills to improve your team's focus, effort and competitiveness. Green Bay Head Coach Matt Bollant shows you how he builds the Phoenix offensive and defensive systems in a live practice setting.

Bollant's practice starts with a 5-0 offensive shell drill and several drills to teach players to cut, communicate, and play with poise on the offensive end and in their primary and secondary breaks.

He uses a rapid fire drill for practicing high percentage game shots out of the Phoenix offense. This is followed by full court 2-on-2, 3-on-3, and block-hold-release drills which emphasize offensive fundamentals in the half-court game and the primary and secondary break. These drills are a great way to help your players make mental transitions during games and to get your players' "brains flowing."

Teach your players how to be aggressive using full court "blood drills" to build an attack mentality in the open court. Pick up defensive fundamentals with a 3-on-3 Cut Throat Drill that emphasizes closing out low, communicating with teammates (offensively and defensively), being in a triple threat position, utilizing the jump stop, and making sure his players do not use a "butt ball" action.

The defensive emphasis continues as Bollant teaches "closeouts inside the V." He uses a 1-on-1 drill to demonstrate how to square up to a defender off the closeout. He puts an emphasis on teaching high hands, long and low first step, and making sure you don't open the gate. You'll also see a 4-on-3 passing drill to teach defenders how to communicate and pressure the ball while making your opponent think about their next pass.

The practice session ends with variations of 4-on-4 shell drill. Bollant takes you through his layers of shell to teach his players the cutting and screening action of their motion offense. He uses 4-on-4 and 5-on-5 shell to create a tough practice mentality and for game preparation on both the offensive and defensive end of the court. You will learn how to build solid defensive principles and pressure, how to create good help side defense and help the helper action, and how to move and think without the ball. Coach finishes up his practice with "3 Ways" Drill to put it all together.

Get practice ideas to get your players to think quicker and play faster.

All Access Bucknell Basketball Practice
with Dave Paulsen,
Bucknell University Head Coach; 2011 Patriot League Coach of the Year;
2x D-III National Coach of the Year, 2003 National Championship Coach (Williams College)

Two-time National Coach of the Year Dave Paulsen displays his superior teaching ability and his attention to detail in this All Access DVD.

Coach Paulsen's practices are a great example of efficiency and preparation. Every drill, whether the aim is to improve passing or shooting, is a breakdown drill for their "Buckeye" or Ball Screen Motion Offense. Every 5-on-5 mini-scrimmage has a different twist to emphasize taking care of the ball and heighten defensive intensity. Every defensive drill - from closeout to rebounding to shell drill - includes an element of Paulsen's "Buckeye" motion offense.

A great example is the 4-on-0 shooting drill. In teams of four, players work on every option, one at a time. The viewer - just like the players - learn Coach Paulsen's motion offense step-by-step. The team works on 12 different options, from simple pick-and-pop shots, to more intricate reversals into high-low action. These simple drills pop up later when the team goes 5-on-5 and you actually get to see the 4-on-0 drills in action.

In every practice, a big portion is dedicated to variations of competitive 5-on-5 mini-scrimmages. In general the variations are put on the defense, which in return gives the offense different scenarios to face. Paulsen's focus on defense is to create a swarming defense, giving the offense the impression that the defense "is everywhere." This further ingrains the players' understanding of the motion offense and its numerous options.

"Rush" is a 5-on-4-plus-1 disadvantage drill. In "3 consecutive stops" the best defensive team wins, which really puts the pressure on the offense to perform. In "Score Stop," teams only get points if they can get a defensive stop after a made basket.

In the "Sureness Drill," teams of 3 battle each other trying to advance the ball without turning it over. In full court, as well as half court settings, the teams play each other in full denial pressure and each players is limited to one dribble at a time.

Coach Paulsen's shell drills are set up as a progressive drill. In a 4-on-4 setting, getting a stop gets more difficult as the offensive team goes from static passing, to guard cutters (give-and-go), to baseline flashes and post ups.

Coach Paulsen is a great teacher. Whether it is fundamental footwork during passing drills or stopping play during a 5-on-5 scrimmage, Paulsen delivers basketball knowledge at every juncture. This All Access DVD series will make any coach, at any level, better.
