Transition Offense & Fast Break Drills
with Joe Mihalich,
Niagara University Head Coach

Coach Mihalich begins this DVD with coaching philosophy and beliefs that have led him to a successful coaching career. Mihalich believes strongly in practice preparation. Elements of his practice philosophy include shooting drills early in practice, repetition with variety, have a plan every day, "it's not what you teach it's what you emphasize," make drills competitive, be a master teacher and you play the way you practice. Moving to the full court, Mihalich introduces the full court passing drill. This drill is fast paced where players run, pass, catch and shoot lay-ups as quickly as possible in one minute. He preaches that execution is the goal of this drill, not speed. Four spot passing is a drill that prepares a team to play against pressure and fosters communication among teammates. Five Fast Breaks is an excellent drill played 5-on-5 in the full court. Each break has a different finish based on Mihalich's instructions. Line transition drill is a fast paced 2-on-1 drill that works on both offense and defense. Another fast break drill that provides conditioning and decision making is 4-on-4-on-4 in the full court. Mihalich's transition game flows from the break into secondary offense then into continuity offense.

Cover: john brady: offensive explosion - transition and press break
John Brady: Offensive Explosion - Transition and Press Break
with John Brady,
Louisiana State University Head Coach

Coach Brady begins with a warm-up drill incorporating a variety of ball handling skills. Because the SEC is heavy on pressing, he feels his team must be solid in their press break. Once the ball is thrown in, Brady wants to have a sideline, middle, reverse and deep pass available for the passer. Cutters are taught to catch and score, which will draw defenders and free up space for other players. By walking through this press break, Brady demonstrates each option from various spots on the floor. Multiple options give teams flexibility when facing pressure. Brady preaches that hands must be available for all passers, ball fakes are essential and the use of two hard dribbles from any spot will stretch the defense and create passing opportunities down the floor. He demonstrates a special option against the press, One Down, which is designed for a deep pass and a lay-up. Moving to transition offense, Brady shares his thought on scoring on the offensive end. He shows a designated break from a free throw situation that allows for quick breaks for baskets. Many options are illustrated at the end of the break for excellent scoring opportunities. Spacing, stagger screening and on-ball screens are part of this transition system.

Cover: bruce weber: competitive games & drills for transition basketball
Bruce Weber: Competitive Games & Drills for Transition Basketball
with Bruce Weber,
University of Illinois Head Coach;
2005 NCAA Runner-Up

Coach Weber begins by differentiating between a "run and gun" and "run and score" mentality. He sees the offensive transition game as a way to ease the pressure off your half court offense to manufacture points. Weber starts with basic one-on-one drills and then builds into more game-like situation. He places an emphasis on defensive transition early in the season because other team's offenses are not fully developed. When teaching the fast break, there are four main focus areas: warm-up, primary drills, early offense and competitive play. Without a numbers advantage, he teaches the "transition motion" game, which flows right into half court offense. Drills include three-man fast break, 5-0 conditioning, speed lay-ups, three-man weave, 3-on-3 transition defense drill and 3-on-3 box out and transition. The 20-point game is Weber's favorite competitive drill. This is a full court 3-on-3 drill that also serves as a great conditioner.

Cover: lorenzo romar: six drills for finishing in transition
Lorenzo Romar: Six Drills for Finishing in Transition
with Lorenzo Romar,
University of Washington Head Coach

In this DVD, Coach Romar shares the vital components that form the foundation of his successful program. The Huskie program is based on defense, rebounding, sharing the ball and competing. Up-tempo basketball is a staple in Romar's system, as is defense and rebounding. Exerting pressure on the ball helps the Huskies make their opponent feel pressured and uncomfortable. His defense picks up the ball as soon as it changes hands and tries to eliminate any direct penetrating passes. Romar uses five players to illustrate his transition game. Players fill lanes early and run the floor hard. Keys to scoring are spacing, not letting the ball stick in your hand, shot selection, screening and hitting the open man. The idea of up-tempo is putting maximum pressure on the defense, baseline to baseline. Up-tempo full court drills are imperative to developing this style of play. Drills on this DVD are Weave, Rush, Weave-Rush combo, Three Lanes (five sequences) and 5-on-5 transition. This DVD can lead the way for your team to be successful playing up-tempo basketball.

Cover: roy williams: tar heel offense & transition drills
Roy Williams: Tar Heel Offense & Transition Drills
with Roy Williams,
University of North Carolina Head Coach;
2005 NCAA Champions

Many of Coach Williams' current beliefs were developed in his early days of coaching high school basketball in North Carolina. This DVD will illustrate the "Tar Heel Running Game" with the use of players in an impressive on-court demonstration. This style relies on running the floor and sharing the ball with teammates. Advantages of this style are that the running game negates the defense's ability to get set, which leads to many easy baskets. Williams covers his three offensive rules against a set defense, the importance of reading the defense and the importance of getting the ball out of the net and inbounds quickly. To work all facets of the primary break, Williams includes many drills that help offensive advantage situations, communication, finishing, down court passes by post players, quick inbounds pass and more. Once the primary break ends, the secondary offense begins. Multiple options are built into this attacking scheme. Ball reversal, lob, back screen and post feed are all options in the secondary. To safeguard against a denied reversal, a screen away option and on ball screen option keep the offense flowing. Williams uses 5-on-5 play to point out important teaching points. No college team runs the fast break as well as Coach Williams' Tar Heels. This DVD has drills that can be applied to any team and can help your team run and score "all night"!
