Sylvia Hatchell: Drills for the Quick Break System
with Sylvia Hatchell, University of North CarolinaHead Women's Basketball Coach; NCAA Championship CoachCarolina women's basketball is synonymous with fast break basketball. Points in Coach Hatchell's system come from three areas; fast break, second chance points and off turnovers. An emphasis during practices includes the art of reading fast break situations. The 3-2 Fast Break Drill and the 2-on-1 Break Situation are good teaching drills for decision-making - shot selection and passing angles are presented many times during these drills. A good outlet is the key to getting the ball quickly down the floor and Hatchell shows outlet drills to start the break. The entire fast break is displayed in 5-0 drills that emphasize the outlet, running lanes down the floor and aggressive play by the point guard to finish the break. Next, Hatchell installs a quick moving, screening offense that can be used from junior high to the college level. Using the full court, she instructs players to run the break followed by this quick screening offense. The "Slice" concept is introduced as a way to get the ball down the floor quicker by the point guard. Hatchell concludes by sharing some excellent half court and out of bounds plays for scoring in crucial parts of the game. All of the concepts presented are conducive to pushing the ball quickly down the floor and scoring! 60 minutes. 2007.

Five-Star Basketball: Fastbreak Basketball - 10 Seconds of Freedom
with Bob Traina, Five-Star Basketball Coach/Instructor Seminole (FL) HS, Head Boy's Coach All fast breaks start with rebounding the basketball, and Traina begins by breaking down the outlet pass to the guard. Added to this, wings sprint the floor to the basket. The first option is the lay-up or jump shot, but wings are also in position to flow into secondary action. Traina breaks down the 2-on-1 break in drill form, using the pass to advance down the floor. The "look away" lay-up and the bounce pass option are demonstrated. The 3-on-2 break is another part of the break that must be mastered. Four options against two defenders are presented. The goal is to get a shot and a rebound before the defense can get set and matched up. The 5-man weave combo drill puts all parts together into one drill. This is an active, continuous drill that incorporates passing, running, shooting and decision-making. The second 5 seconds of this system is the secondary offense. Traina walks his players through the secondary offense first, explaining the role of each player and the many options available. Traina demonstrates the secondary action against man and zone defenses. In four trips up and down the floor, players can execute all four options available in secondary offense. This DVD presents more than a fastbreak - this system is the main attack down the floor to score in a hurry! 2007.
