Good to Great: Drills for Championship Defense
with Pat Clatchey,
Mount St. Joseph's (MD) High School;
2009 McDonalds All-American coach

Coach Clatchey believes that defense is the difference between good and great. After designing a new defensive system, Clatchey's teams began to consistently win championships. In this basketball DVD, you will witness a progression of techniques from the defensive slide and footwork to 6-on-4 defensive transition. Each drill builds on the last and includes elements of teamwork, toughness and a mentality of defending the basket at all costs. Not only will you bolster your drill collection, you will see how these drills alone can make up your entire defensive system. This system is designed to stop common action by most opponents, freeing up valuable practice time for other aspects of game preparation. Learn how to minimize cutting opportunities by any offensive system with drills for flash cutting, ball cutting and on-ball screens. Add clarity to your practices, improve your defense and save time by adopting these championship drills.

Larry Shyatt: Competitive Team "Peer Pressure" Drills
with Larry Shyatt,
University of Florida Assistant Coach

A major focus on the practice floor at the University of Florida is competitive "peer pressure" drills. Starting with an aggressive stretch, players prepare to give an all out effort on the floor. The Gators have found that using "peer pressure" as a tool can be very effective. 'Loud and proud' communication is mandatory for every player in every drill, practice and game. The first full court drill is the lay-up drill with a goal of 13 made lay-ups. Full court passing drills create good habits, communication and passing skills. Other passing drills include three-man full court passing and three-man weave. Team ball handling is accomplished by the dribble series. This series includes the speed drills and ability to maneuver around cones on the floor. The 44-and-1 lay-up drill pushes players to make 44 lay-ups in one minute. Coach Shyatt shares six perimeter-shooting drills, and concludes with an intense defensive shell drill that incorporates positioning with the rope technique.

University of Florida Assistant Coach

Developing habits through consistent daily reinforcement is a major key towards developing a defensive mindset. The priorities of your program must be a part of your player's knowledge of the game. At Florida they use overload drills to make it difficult on the defense by adding extra offensive players. One of the keys in practice, and then in games, is forcing your team to holler, not talk . "early, loud and continuous" is the teaching point for player communication on the floor! Coach Shyatt demonstrates the defense drills that have made them a great team. Drill topics include guarding the ball, position defense using the rope, pass denial, guarding dribble penetration, post defense, defense transition, 4 on 3 scramble, trapping and full court lay-ups.

Bob Huggins' Drills for Man-to-Man Defense
with Bob Huggins,
University of West Virginia Head Coach;
Conference USA "Coach of the Decade"

In Coach Huggins' defense, the middle of the floor - the shoot - is an area where the ball is not allowed. Pushing the ball to the sideline is the goal of this defense. A major concept in Huggins' defense is not allowing straight line passes. To execute this, players are taught to be on the line of the ball to make the pass go over the top instead of directly to the receiver. The result has an affect on the offense by making them move away from the basket to catch the ball. Every day Huggins runs a simple 2-on-2 drill to emphasize getting to the ball, or "sprint to help." The shell drill incorporates all of these principles and does not allow direct line passes. Another key drill is 1-one-1 closeout drill from basket to the top of the key. The help and recover/penetrate and pitch drill forces players to cover area and stresses closing out with hands up and denying penetration. The 3-on-1 close out drill forces the defender to react to the direction of the pass. Huggins wants to deny the ball to the post and shares his thoughts and a drill for post defense. Getting through screens is taught from an anticipation standpoint to beat the cutter to the ball. This drill is done with blocking pads to simulate contact on the screen.

Five-Star Basketball: Defensive Philosophy & Drills for Successful Team Basketball
with Lewis Howard, Five-Star Basketball Coach/Instructor; Largo HS (MD) Head Boys Basketball Coach

The high scoring offense at Largo High School is based on defensive pressure and forcing turnovers. Coach Howard opens with the half court shell drill. Elements included are jumping to the ball, help side, strong side, rotation and trapping the corner. Another drill that helps build team defense is the head on the ball drill. As the dribbler works up the floor, the defender stays in front of the ball, making the dribbler change directions. The drill ends with one-on-one play from half court. One of his signature trapping defenses is 25, which is a full court strategy when you let your man catch the ball in front and uses trapping. A straight man-to-man defensive system in the half court, 22, adds trapping in the half court. The two-on-one trap drill is a key drill for this system of play. Other drills address recovery, loose balls, taking the charge, and deflections.
