Jay Spoonhour: Drills for Building Half Court Pressure Defense
with Jay Spoonhour,
Moberly Area CC. Head Coach;
National Junior College Coach of the Year;
Former Assistant Coach at Missouri, UTSA, UNLV, St. Louis, and Valparaiso.

Aggressive half court defense is an critical aspect of a successful program. Using on court demonstration, Jay Spoonhour takes you through individual and group drills to teach the fundamentals of man-to-man defense.

Individual Defense
Coach Spoonhour's first set of drills focus on cutting off drives and denying passes to the wing. You'll see how to develop your players' ability to:

  • Create ball pressure and take away vision
  • Deny passes
  • Maximize foot quickness
  • Stop the dribble using the slide-run-slide technique
Group Defense
Teach your players how individual defense is incorporated into the team concept. Using on court demonstrations, the shell drill is used to show the proper movement of players on passes. Drills focus on keeping both eyes on the ball and quickness in getting to proper positions.

The group drills focus on denying the wing pass and cutting off the baseline. Spoonhour focuses on help defense, not giving up easy layups and forcing jump shots.

In addition to these group drills, Spoonhour demonstrates proper footwork on the wing. The need to have proper footwork technique is vital for having a solid team defensively.

Using these drills, your team will develop the skills necessary to succeed on the defensive end of the floor. This video is great for beginning coaches and for coaches who need a refresher course on half court defense.

Competitive Drills for Man-to-Man Defense
with Ben Jacobson,
University of Northern Iowa Head Coach;
2x Missouri Valley Coach of the Year (2009 and 2010); back-to-back MVC Champs (2009-2010)

Increase your intensity and toughness on defense and create a game-like atmosphere in practice using these defensive breakdown drills from Ben Jacobson.

Coach Jacobson reveals four key principles to his quarter court defense and provides 10 defensive drills that will provide a solid foundation for your defensive practice time.

The drills start 1-on-0 and progress to 5-on-5 working on the fundamentals of defense, balance, keeping your feet on the ground, squaring up, rotating, communicating and more. Your team will work on pressuring the ball so the offense cannot turn the corner on you; developing a closed stance to give you a better opportunity for a short close out; and moving with the basketball as it is being moved.

Jacobson and his UNI Panthers have made a name for themselves with their quarter court defense. In 2009, UNI was named the Missouri Valley Defensive Team of the Year holding their competition to 63.5 points per game and 41.9 percent field goal shooting.

Jacobson's defensive philosophy is 80 percent Pack-line Defense and 20 percent ball denial, push sideline / rotate to the baseline.

This DVD will help you create a defensive philosophy and improve the effectiveness of your defensive practice time.

D'EM UP: Five Steps to Relentless On Ball Defense
with Darrick Rizzo, Defensive Specialist;
Director of My Basketball Profile Recruiting Service/ D' EM UP Basketball

Learn to physically and mentally wear down your opponent with intense defensive pressure. Defensive specialist Darrick Rizzo teaches his unique, high-energy approach to teaching on the ball defense.

"D-Unit 101" is Rizzo's system for intense, on the ball defense. Rizzo reveals his five steps to suffocating defense teaching each step with passion, enthusiasm and discipline.

Step 1: The Stance. Being quick on defense requires a fundamentally sound stance. Rizzo teaches the stance and his "defensive slide test," to evaluate players' stance and sliding technique.

Step 2: Move the Correct Foot First. Create a quicker slide technique! Rizzo shows you how correcting your slide can add quickness to your defensive game, how to harass your opponent by constantly forcing him to turn and how to use your arms as defensive weapons.

Step 3: Drop Step and Attack. Learn to cut-off the dribbler and keep pace with his change of direction. Rizzo demonstrates how to use the heel toe technique for lightning quick recoveries.

Step 4: Smother the Ball. Attack dead balls using Rizzo's unique arm motion.

Step 5: Draw the Charge. Defensive frustration leads to ball handlers attempting to create space. Take advantage of pushing off and low shoulders by taking the charge and getting the ball back.

Rizzo takes these defensive concepts and adds four additional drills you can do to work these techniques, create defensive endurance and put teeth in your defense.

Rizzo held one of the NBA's greatest players, Kobe Bryant, to only 8 points during a high school game. Bryant's lowest scoring output in his high school career.

Coach Rizzo's passionate and disciplined approach to defense helps players at all ages and levels of play improve their defense, leadership abilities and enthusiasm for the game.

Darrin Horn: Core Drills to Build Your Defense
with Darrin Horn,
University of South Carolina Head Coach

Darrin Horn brings to light four big questions every coach needs to answer about his or her defense. The answer to these questions will shape your team's identity, what you work on in practice, and the drills you choose to build your defense.

Horn demonstrates and teaches the eight essential drills he uses in practice to create and instill his team's defensive identity. These drills emphasize stopping the ball in conversion, communicating every defensive move, protecting the basket, having active hands, stopping straight line passes and splits in traps, and developing toughness on defense.

Each drill works on a specific area of defense including conversion defense, trapping and getting a stop. Horn's Fundamental Defense Drill provides an effective review of key defensive fundamentals in one drill saving you practice time.

In each drill, Horn points out the purpose of the drill, how it relates to his overall defensive philosophy and provides teaching and coaching points for easy implementation with your team.

This basketball DVD is an excellent tool that will help you develop a strong defensive identity, improve your spread and responsiveness against a variety of offenses, and reinforce an aggressive mentality within your program.

Cover: tim welsh: drills for disruptive defense
Tim Welsh: Drills for Disruptive Defense
with Tim Welsh,
former Providence College Head Coach

Tim Welsh takes a fundamental, old school approach to this basketball DVD on defense. Ten drills form the foundation of Welsh's philosophy and drill catalog, with stance, balance and active feet incorporated into every drill and teaching point. Proper footwork helps all players recover successfully with slides and angles. Welsh's system of defense implements trapping all over the floor - from man-to-man to zone. By using disadvantage drills and trapping, defenses are forced to communicate and cover the entire court effectively. Trust, rotation and ball pressure disrupt the offense, create deflections and force turnovers. Welsh shows you how to cause turnovers by back tapping even when beat in the full court. In the front court or full court, use this system to make the offense uncomfortable and on their heels. By forcing more turnovers and contesting shots, your defense will allow fewer points and get you more wins.
