Doug Bruno: Zone Offense Principles
with Doug Bruno, DePaul University Head Women's Coach; 4X C-USA Champions; Conference USA Coach of the Decade; USA Basketball U.S. U18 (2006) and U19 (2007) National Teams Head Coach - both won gold medals at the World ChampionshipsTo simplify zone offense, Coach Bruno sees all zones as match-up zones. Spontaneous movement and spacing are two major keys to attacking a zone defense. Bruno demonstrates the keys to zone movement including overloading the backside of the zone, skip passes, and penetration. There are various uses of the short corner in this zone attack coming from the perimeter and the high post. Screening the backside of the zone allows for skip passes and slipping into the middle of the zone. Bruno shows how the ball screen is utilized against the zone, as well as the flash from behind the zone from the baseline and the weak side. He also covers rebounding against the zone. Bruno shares three offensive sets against the zone using players on the floor, as well as drills to help build this zone offense attack. 69 minutes. 2008.

Tubby Smith: Utilizing a Zone Defensive System
with Tubby Smith, University of Minnesota Head Coach; '98 NCAA Championship Coach (Kentucky)Coach Smith is committed to the fundamentals of tough, pressure man-to-man defense as a prerequisite for a solid zone defense. He sites many reasons for employing zone including: slowing the game down, change pace, rebounding and neutralizing good post players. Smith shares his version of the 2-3, 3-2 and 1-3-1 zone defenses and credits Jim Boeheim (Syracuse) for sharing many of these concepts while they coached together on the Olympic staff. With a 5-on-5 setting, Smith details each position in the zone and their role in every situation. For instance, Smith wants his best perimeter defender to be on the right side of the opponent's zone. This defender plays the point guard on the inside shoulder and keeps the ball out of the middle. The other guard is responsible for taking away the flash into the mid-post area. Playing zone against the opponent's baseline out of bounds is an important piece of this zone package as well. This is a great addition to any zone defense library! 61 minutes. 2008.

Ed DeChellis: 1-3-1 Extended Half Court Zone Defense
with Ed DeChellis, Penn State University Head CoachThe biggest reason for playing the 1-3-1 zone defense is to neutralize your opponent's best post player. It also gives you the ability to move different players around in the defense. The point of the 1-3-1 zone must be a player who is athletic and can finish on the other end. A point guard-type player is perfect for the back of the zone. His coverage area is from corner to corner and he must be a great communicator. The 3-man covers the right side, from wing to block. The 4-man, the best rebounder, starts on the left wing. The 5-man sets up at the free throw line and is "the linebacker" of the entire defense- his coverage is from the top of the key to block. The key for this defense is to discourage direct passes by the offense. DeChellis breaks down the zone by putting the ball in different areas of the floor. Drills are included to fine-tune this defense. DeChellis calls the 1-3-1 zone "a high risk, high reward attack" that can change tempo quickly and make athletic opponents lethargic in a hurry! 69 minutes. 2007.
