Coach Cleary's Hitting 2-Pack
LD-02947A: with Brian Cleary,
University of Cincinnati Head Coach

Coach Cleary's goal in this DVD is to give coaches a chance to learn how to efficiently teach hitting to their players. Cleary begins his presentation with hitting mechanics. Simplifying the elements of hitting is key for player production. The ultimate goal is to give the barrel of the bat its best chance to hit the ball. Cleary covers the proper mechanics of hitting, including the set up, grip and a flex in a wrist. Cleary also talks about pre-movement or the hitting position. Use of the body and hands are important to the swing and they work in unison. The swing concludes with the finish, a roll of the wrist. Cleary breaks down the psychology of being at bat, discussing the handling different pitches, different locations and hitting or refusing pitches.

46 minutes. 2008.

LD-02947B: with Brian Cleary,
University of Cincinnati Head Coach

The role of drills in hitting is to address the hitter building his swing as well as the player maintaining his swing. Coach Cleary's goal when practicing hitting is not to hit the ball hard, but practice a swing that will translate to success in a game. Drills provide help in two areas; correcting faulty swings and building and maintaining good swings. Before drill work, Cleary breaks down the batter's set up. He uses a tool called the 'magic wand' that helps him isolate parts of the hitter's body to make corrections. Other tools used during drill work include the stride box, the tire, tees and soft toss. The goal for hitters is to be sound mechanically so their only job is to attack the pitch and the pitcher!

Cover: hitting program for an explosive swing
Hitting Program for an Explosive Swing
with Jay Johnson,
University of San Diego Hitting Coach

How can you ensure getting an explosive swing every time at the plate? Johnson shares the San Diego drill progression designed to maximize consistency, strength and power in the swing. The first concept is the impact of seeing the ball, as timing, pitch selection and the path of hands during the swing are all dictated by seeing the ball. The zone drill, including three zones, is taught to hitters at the plate. Drills include the colored ball tracking drill and the slider drill. Explosive hitting is developed with three drills; backhand catch, torque drill with tee and the uphill tee drill. Balance and timing are added to the most important areas of hitting. Johnson demonstrates the bounce drill where the ball is bounced off the ground before hitting. The hands are also important in hitting, and the short bat drill emphasizes the batter's hands going straight in the direction of the pitch. Angle hitting and angle screen are two drills that enhance the short, quick swing, and the "Smoke the Cones" drill helps develop hits to center.

Hitting Drills and Technique
with Gino DiMare,
University of Miami Assistant Head Coach

Coach DiMare's system and philosophy for hitting is highlighted in this DVD. Coach DiMare teaches hitters to stand tall and finish at the plate. Sandbags are used to teach the correct stance needed. The Stride drill teaches players to load up their lower body to create power at the plate. The upper body is loaded up in drills where players position the bat with the barrel at a slight angle. DiMare describes the nine hitting zones in detail. Attention is given to each zone separately through toss drills and by using live hitters in a batting cage environment. The tracking drill helps develop the eye as it picks up the baseball as quickly as possible. Miami players use the tee to work on technique and fundamentals. This is an excellent DVD for detailed drills and hitting technique from one of college baseball's elite programs.
