Cover: dynamic defensive drills for infielders
Dynamic Defensive Drills for Infielders
with Ed Servais, Creighton University Head Coach;
In 2009 Creighton lead the NCAA Division I baseball in fielding percentage (.984), consistently ranks in the Top 5 in the nation in fielding percentage

During his tenure as Head Coach at Creighton University, Ed Servais has coached his teams to the highest fielding percentage in the country, with no other Division I team committing as few errors. Creighton has achieved a single-year fielding percentage as high as .984, which is the best in the NCAA aluminum bat era.

In this video, Coach Servais dismisses the labels of "hard" and "soft" hands and shows what's really going on - poor technique vs. proper technique. Servais covers every aspect of fielding, including:

  • The glove - how to choose it, break it in, and wear it
  • Two types of ready position that get the feet active and the glove prepared
  • The approach - from first step, through attack, to the last two steps
  • The glove action that emphasizes "up" before "in" which improves control, and avoids balls off the heel
  • Two footwork patterns for the throwing action
  • The arm action that increases accuracy and reduces errors
Coach Servais also presents a complete throwing program that progresses from the ground up, isolates every element of the throw and places a high premium on accuracy.

He shares his rapid catch and rapid fire drills that feature two drills to develop footwork on long and short relays, dead ball touch drill, the "Last Two Steps" drill, the "Short Hop Series" that creates proper hand position and keeps the chin down, fielding progression drill, baby gator training glove and no-glove fielding drills, and a timing drill in which coach Servais reveals the precise delivery-time target for beating out college runners.

Raise your team's fielding percentage with an approach proven to develop mastery and that leads to success on game day.

Championship Drill Progressions for Baseball
LD-03913A: with Brandon Buck, Mountain Pointe (AZ) High School Head Coach;
2011 5A Division I Arizona State Champs,
finished 2011 ranked #1 Nationally via Freeman's Poll on Max Preps.

Build confident corner infielders and lay a firm foundation for ongoing success. Brandon Buck presents over 20 drills to develop footwork and quick hands to cleanly field ground balls.

First Base Technique
Coach Buck presents techniques and drills for perfecting footwork, glove work, stride, stance, fielding ground balls, handling slow rollers, making flips, getting the lead runner, working picks, eliminating swipes, holding runners, facing the throw, and keeping the bag-foot out of "cement," while always taking full advantage of all 18 inches of the base to make outs. These points in combination will make your first basemen dangerous, defensive weapons and active creators of outs.

Third Base Technique
Coach Buck covers championship mechanics and movement. He starts with the stance that sets up success against everything from regular grounders to hot shots. He then moves on to techniques and drills for forehand and backhand picks, the approach, fielding with rhythm, executing double plays, and a trick for instantly stopping bobbles and successfully finishing the play.

Every segment employs Brandon Buck's proven "drill-progression" technique, developing proper movements and instilling perfection through a logical series in which each drill builds on the one prior. This unique approach simultaneously instills confidence and creates competence. Drills also include creative use of the pitching machine in order to maximize fielding reps, minimize fatigue, and free up more of the field.

LD-03913B: with Brandon Buck, Mountain Pointe (AZ) High School Head Coach;
2011 5A Division I Arizona State Champs,
finished 2011 ranked #1 Nationally via Freeman's Poll on Max Preps.

Starting with the fielding stance, Coach Buck demonstrates how he trains his middle infielders to work groundballs on both sides. He demonstrates the left-right footwork foundation that makes it easier to read hops and gets your infielders attacking the ball, glove work with funneling and picks, and footwork for all situations.

Buck thoroughly covers double-play feeds from both short and second, including the flip feed, dart feeds, jump turn, in the hole, and knee feeds from second. He also shares a specific method for determining double-play depth for each middle infielder on a player-by-player basis.

Additional coverage includes eliminating lateral movement, drills for creating fielding rhythm, the eye-ball in the glove approach, fielding slow rollers, reducing steps between fielding and throwing, picking up balls with the bare-hand, a technique for instantly counteracting a bobbled ball, and the importance of having a short memory.

Every segment employs Coach Buck's proven "drill-progression" approach, developing proper movements and instilling confidence and competence through a logical series in which each drill builds on the one before.

More than a demonstration of drills, this is a successful coaching approach proven to create improvement!

Brandon Buck emphasizes that the catcher's #1 job is to "keep a strike a strike," and shows you the tools and techniques that enable every catcher to execute it effectively. He also draws an important distinction between funneling and framing and shows why funneling is more desirable.

Coach Buck covers receiving, blocking, throwing, footwork, glove work, stance, body positioning, swaying, throws to second, getting the fast angle to third, back-picking at first, and handling the pitching staff.

He supplies tips for throwing runners out with the feet, keeping the throw from rising, "snaking" on bare-hand pickups, "dustpan-broom" scooping, handling bunts and tags, reading throws, plays at the plate and a method for luring runners to slide where you want in order to make the out and avoid injury.

He even shares a simple technique for positioning the glove on the hand so the catcher "stays soft."

Every segment employs Brandon Buck's proven "drill-progression" approach, developing proper movements and instilling confidence and competence through a logical series in which each drill builds on the one before.

An excellent DVD filled with receiving and framing drills that will help your catcher "keep a strike a strike."
