60 Defensive Practice Drills for Baseball
with Mark Brew,
Lee University Head Coach;
2010 & 2008 NAIA National Runner-up,
2008 NAIA National Coach of the Year

Use these drill progressions to properly train fundamentals during your practices. This will provide your athletes with the confidence they need to make plays in game situations.

Broken down into three sections, this DVD will teach and demonstrate the vital characteristics that each player needs to possess to successfully play their position.

  • Catchers - Your catchers are the cornerstone of your defense! This DVD shows how to develop essential receiving, blocking and fielding techniques. These drills work on framing a pitch, effective strategies and techniques for blocking pitches in the dirt, fielding bunts (both picking up the ball and making accurate throws to each base), reading and catching pop ups, covering home plate, snap throws to first and more.
  • Outfielders - Through drill work, your outfielders can develop the instincts they need to be successful. These drills focus on body control and footwork. Train your outfielders to track fly balls correctly, battle the sun successfully, get balls off the fence cleaner, take great angles to a fly ball, properly communicate with each other and throw to the correct base.
  • Infielders - Reduce errors in your infield. Teach your infielders to read hops and to field the ball cleanly. See how to take away the spin on short hops, field with soft hands, gobble up slow rollers, how to properly field a bobbled ball, pop up communication and more.

Jam packed with over 60 drills, this DVD is sure to help you reduce errors and win more games!

Situational Baseball Drills for Team Defense
with Joe Schaefer,
Point Loma Nazarene University Head Coach;
2009 NAIA national runner up; two NAIA World Series appearances;
two conference championships; Eight consecutive postseason appearances

Two of the most challenging aspects of coaching a baseball practice are keeping all of your players active and covering as many game situations as possible. In this baseball DVD from Championship Productions, Joe Schaefer shares eight complete team defensive drills you can use to do both in your limited amount of practice time.

  • All Double Play Drill: Allows infielders in every position practice turning double plays in quick succession.
  • Multi-Purpose Drill: Works on pitch-outs, fielding bunts, covering steals and double plays for infielders and pitchers.
  • Three-line Bunt Drill: Enables your pitching staff to practice three types of bunt situations simultaneously.
  • Flip-Flop Bunt Drill: Simulates bunts to either side of the infield to fine-tune your corner coverage.
  • Pick Stations Drill: Allows your entire pitching staff to work on base running management to all three bases and your catchers to work on pop up throws.
  • Right/Left Dual Fungoes Drill: Get your infielders a large number of reps in a short amount of time.
  • Outfield Assists Drill: A great drill for outfielders and infielders to slow down teams with aggressive base runners.

These are the same drills Coach Schaefer incorporates everyday in practice that have helped produce two NAIA Gold-Glove winners over the past two years. Sharpen your defense this season and get your players more reps in practice!

Jim Dietz's Defensive 2-Pack
LD-02164A: with Jim Dietz,
former San Diego State University Head Coach,
ABCA Hall of Fame 2002

In this baseball video, Jim Dietz lays out the practical steps of organizing a championship defensive practice that is efficient and keeps everyone involved. Coach Dietz strongly emphasizes the importance of a set daily routine so every player knows each drill and achieves continuity in each baseball practice. Dietz's goal for each defensive practice is safety, concentration, and pride, which he emphasizes in six defensive drills through discussion and on-field demonstration. His baseball drills start with the outfielders and work into the infielders, pitchers, and catchers. Areas covered include outfield/ infield communication, relays, spin-turns, rundowns, defending the running game, bunt defense positions and execution, pitch-outs and pick-offs. In addition, a game called "Speedball," invented at SDSU, shows how to add a little fun to your baseball practice while still maintaining the purpose. Dietz shows how to create and plan an effective and efficient defensive baseball practice that achieves a flow and a daily routine to help you be organized and get the most out of your practice and players at any level.

LD-02164B: with Jim Dietz,
former San Diego State University Head Coach,
ABCA Hall of Fame 2002

Defense wins games and championships!Here, Coach Dietz, with over 1200 wins in his college coaching career, shares how to build a defensive strategy. In a lecture-style setting, Dietz begins with his 10 rules of defense, emphasizing knowing the opposition, your team, and combining aggressiveness and control. He then gets into the "heart" of defensive strategy by covering five defensive areas; bunt defense, run defense, outfield defense, catcher defense, and pitcher defense. In each of these sets he discusses and diagrams individual responsibilities in various situations and set plays, including sacrifice and squeeze bunts, pitch-outs, 1st and 3rd plays, and the "Gap" defense in the outfield. A few major points of emphasis thoroughly explained here are effective communication and using set plays with signs and adequate preparation. This video is a great complement to the team defense drills video, "Organizing Defensive Practice," as it gives you a defensive strategy in all situations, allowing you to create a well-prepared defensive team on your way to victory at all levels!
